Stress free living

Writer: Ash PanchalAsh Panchal

How does stress affect people -

What is it?

It is an increase in 2 hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, both produced by the adrenal glands.

Adrenaline - increases heart rate & bp

Cortisol - increases glucose in the blood to give us more energy

Why does this occur?

It’s to protect us from a physical threat. Which produces our fight or flight response. So the adrenaline makes us sharper, more alert and responsive, the cortisol gives us the extra energy that we need when we decide whether to run away or stay and fight. Which is really helpful if you are living at one with nature, like the Masai mara in Africa who are in tune with nature and utilise stress the way it was meant for us.

The stress we deal with in the material world, where we are surrounded by manmade structures, machines and tools, which we call essential and can’t live without, can actually be a source of our stress.

Most stress caused these days are from work, relationships, finances, moving house, redundancy, divorce, bullying, what we generally call. This can be broken down further to individuals, phone calls, text messages, emails, with each piling on the pressure.

This pressure produces stress. As these threats are not physical and you can’t always see them, your body and mind don’t know when to turn the stress.

Stress is reversed by oxytocin which is produced by the pituitary gland. This only happens when you can see the threat has gone, either you ran away from it or you fought into submission.

You can’t see modern day threats, they are invisible, because they come from objects that are designed to help us, for example, your computer, your phone, your house…. You get the picture.

Why am I telling you all this….

One job I had in my early 30’s was great to start with and ended up being the worst, due to the person I ended up working for. He made my life a misery… not only was I getting daily threats that my job was on the line, he also managed to alienate most of the other staff from me… the results were: insomnia, loss of appetite, loss of weight and severe headaches which cause nose bleeds in the middle of the night!

Everyone knows that long term stress is not good for your health, physical and mental.

So what can you do differently?

  • Box breathing - navy seals use this to reduce stress and it is very effective

  • Externalise it, so you can see it. Write it down, make a video, break it down into controllable and noncontrollable. This makes it easy to see how and where you can make changes to help you

  • Talk to someone you trust, who won’t judge you. Almost everyone has experienced stress in some form or another, talking about will definitely help and start producing oxytocin, which will reduce the stress.
