Why are people so attached to their Phobias?
Firstly, what is it?
Phobias are extreme fear based reactions to an external force, in the shape of a situation, place, environment, sensation, objects, costumes or animal.
It is a very powerful emotional response to something that may not be life threatening. The mind and body decide that it is life threatening and has debilitating effects on the individual who is experiencing them. You can find out more about signs and symptoms on my phobias page (link).
How are phobias formed?
To understand the phobias and people's reluctance to let go of them, we need to understand how they are formed.
On the first or worst occasion the phobia is formed, there is a combining of 2 or more senses. When seeing and/or hearing the experience, it combines with a feeling or emotion. This is called synesthesia.
As this experience normally creates a huge shift. Your perception of the world changes and your subconscious actively looks for evidence to support your phobia. Whether that be in movies, places, environments or someone else's experience.
This is the reason why we hold on to it. Our subconscious mind is constantly trying to protect us from a threat that isn’t really there.
If you know someone who has a phobia and it is impacting their daily life, please get in touch.
